Here’s a bit of tangible data to back it up. 

A significantly creative experiment

Journalist Rob Walker and author Josh Glenn conducted an experiment called Significant Objects, where they asked 100 creative writers to invent stories about random objects.

These items were something you’d find at the neighborhood garage sale - needlepoint ornaments, a quirky ceramic figurine, a yo-yo that was clearly a marketing promo from a gas station.

(Don’t worry, they kept it ethically legit, as the authors state: “Care is taken to avoid the impression that the story is a true one; the intent of the project is not to hoax eBay customers. Doing so would void our test.”

Mega boost in value

The objects purchased totaled $129. They sold it all for $3,612.51 on eBay. 

That’s a 4300% boost in value. 

Wowwie wow wow wow.

Can you imagine what it would be like if your offering boosted 4300% in value?


This is why I wholeheartedly believe:

People decide what is valuable based on the story they’ve heard about something. 

Are you telling your stories with the utmost value? 

Use these questions as a litmus test: 

  • If you were on your website as a stranger, would you be interested to hear more about your service or product? 

  • Have you approached the problem you solve for your audience in a variety of ways, and tested out different angles? 

  • Do people understand what you do within 30 seconds of telling them? Better yet, does it pique their interest?

Experiment a bit. Be playful. Have fun. See what the outcome is. 

Get all up in a Google Doc and write until you make yourself laugh. Inspire yourself. See what value you can create.
